Condition:
Hypermobility
New Title
What is Hypermobility?
Hypermobility refers to joints that move beyond the normal range of motion. While some people are naturally more flexible, hypermobility can sometimes lead to joint pain, instability, fatigue, and frequent injuries. For some, hypermobility is genetic or part of a broader condition such as Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). While in others, it may develop over time due to repetitive strain, muscle imbalances, or poor movement control.
Left untreated, hypermobility can place excess stress on joints and muscles, leading to chronic pain, recurrent injuries, and reduced ability to take part in sport or even everyday activities. For example, someone with hypermobile ankles may experience repeated sprains or feel unstable when walking on uneven ground, making daily life uncomfortable and unpredictable. At Physio 1 to 1, we specialise in helping people with hypermobility regain control, strength, and confidence in their bodies through tailored exercise programs, movement retraining, and joint stability work. With expert care, you can manage symptoms effectively and enjoy a more active, pain-free lifestyle.
Symptoms of Patients with possible Hypermobility:

I and 3 members of my family have been treated by Rob for several years for various injuries and we cannot speak more highly of him and his colleague George. Rob has an enormous wealth of knowledge and expertise and he also uses acupuncture which we find increases our recovery.

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Assessing Hypermobility
Your initial consultation begins with a conversation where we explore your medical history, previous injuries, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. To fully understand how hypermobility is affecting you, your physiotherapist may ask specific questions such as: Do your joints dislocate easily? Have you experienced frequent sprains or strains without a clear cause, do you feel extra tired after everyday activities or struggle with muscle fatigue, do you find it difficult to hold certain positions for long periods, like standing still or sitting upright?
These questions help us build a complete picture of your condition, especially as hypermobility symptoms can vary widely between individuals.
Following this, we carry out a comprehensive physical examination, which includes checking your joint mobility, muscle control, strength, posture, and movement patterns. We may use tools such as the Beighton Score. Which is a standardised method of assessing joint hypermobility, along with specific functional tests to assess joint stability, balance, and proprioception (your body’s awareness of movement and position). For example, we might observe how your knees track during a squat, how your shoulders move under load, or whether your ankles remain stable during balance tasks.
Our goal is to identify not only whether you are hypermobile, but how it’s impacting your movement, strength, and quality of life. From there, we’ll build a clear, individualised plan to help manage symptoms, prevent injury, and improve confidence in your body’s ability to move well.
