Treating Sports Injuries

Sports injuries are incredibly common, affecting athletes of all levels. Studies show that up to 70% of recreational and competitive athletes experience at least one sports-related injury each year. Whether it’s a sprain, strain, or something more complex, timely treatment is essential to ensure a full and lasting recovery.

Common injuries we see include:

  • Muscle strains and tears (e.g. hamstring, calf)
  • Ligament sprains (e.g. ankle, knee)
  • Tendon injuries (e.g. Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow)
  • Joint injuries (e.g. shoulder dislocations, knee pain)
  • Overuse injuries (e.g. shin splints, runner’s knee)

We also welcome more complex or less common injuries, such as:

  • Stress fractures
  • Labral tears (hip or shoulder)
  • Nerve impingements
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Chronic or recurring sports injuries that haven't responded to previous treatment

Untreated or poorly managed sports injuries can lead to longer recovery times, increased time away from your sport, and a higher risk of re-injury. That’s why early intervention and a tailored rehabilitation plan are so important.

We know how vital sport can be, not just for physical fitness, but also for mental wellbeing, identity, and lifestyle. That’s why we’re committed to helping you get back to doing what you love, safely and confidently.

We work with athletes of all abilities, from Olympic and professional level right through to casual gym-goers and weekend runners. Many of our physiotherapists have strong sporting backgrounds themselves and bring that passion into their clinical work. Several of our team members have worked with rugby clubs, in the military, and have particular interest in the demands of high-performance sport.

We’re also proud to run a specialist Running Clinic, designed for runners of all levels who want to recover from injury, optimise their technique, and improve performance.

I and 3 members of my family have been treated by Rob for several years for various injuries and we cannot speak more highly of him and his colleague George. Rob has an enormous wealth of knowledge and expertise and he also uses acupuncture which we find increases our recovery.

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Assessing Sports Injuries

We start by having a detailed conversation about your injury and overall health. This helps us gather important background information, such as:

  • How and when the injury happened
  • What sport or activity you were doing at the time
  • What movements or positions make it better or worse
  • Whether there’s swelling, bruising, or instability
  • Any previous injuries or ongoing issues
  • Your training routine, goals, and upcoming events (e.g. races, matches)

Understanding the nature of your sport also helps us tailor your recovery to the specific demands of your activity, whether you’re a runner, rugby player, swimmer, or gym-goer.

Next, we carry out a hands-on physical examination to pinpoint the injury and assess how your body is responding. Depending on your condition, this might include:

  • Range of motion testing - to see how well the injured area moves compared to the other side
  • Strength testing - checking muscle performance and any weakness
  • Joint stability tests - especially important for injuries like ankle sprains or ACL tears
  • Palpation - feeling the area to identify swelling, tenderness, or structural damage
  • Functional movement tests - such as squats, hops, or sport-specific movements to see how the injury affects your performance
  • Balance and coordination checks - especially for lower limb injuries
  • Gait or running analysis - if the injury is related to walking or running mechanics

The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Sports Injury Management

Exercise Rehabilitation

Structured strengthening, mobility, and functional exercises tailored to your injury and sport - builds strength and flexibility, improves performance, prevents re-injury, and supports long-term recovery.

Manual Therapy

Hands-on techniques including joint mobilisations, deep tissue massage, and myofascial release - reduces pain and stiffness, improves joint movement, releases tight muscles, and accelerates healing.

Acupuncture or Dry Needling

Fine needles inserted into trigger points or muscle tissue - relieves muscle tension, reduces pain and inflammation, improves circulation, and supports tissue healing.

Taping and Strapping

Supportive taping applied to muscles or joints - enhances stability, reduces strain on injured tissues, aids recovery during sport, and builds confidence in movement.

Biomechanical and Movement Analysis

Assessment of how your body moves during activity or sport - identifies poor movement patterns, helps prevent future injuries, and optimises performance.

Sports Massage

Targeted massage for active muscles pre- or post-activity - eases muscle tightness, reduces soreness, speeds up recovery, and improves circulation.

Education and Injury Prevention Advice

Guidance on training, recovery, and injury risk management - helps you understand your body, make smarter training decisions, and avoid re-injury.

Return-to-Play Programs

Step-by-step plan for safely returning to your sport after injury - reduces risk of setbacks, builds confidence, and ensures you're physically ready to perform.
