The Physio 1 to 1 Approach to Assessing Women's Pelvic Health problems

An initial women's health physiotherapy appointment lasts 60 minutes and is a highly confidential, supportive session focused entirely on your comfort.

We start with a thorough assessment to understand the issues you are facing and what the cause might be.

We’ll also chat about your medical background including pregnancies, births or surgeries, what type of symptoms you are experiencing for example pelvic pain, leakage or pressure, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life. We talk about your habits including your typical bowel and bladder routine as well as diet and hydration. This full picture helps us create a treatment plan that’s built around your unique needs.

"I’ve been visiting George at Physio 1 to 1 for the last 6 months after a referral from my consultant and I have to say he has made huge improvements to a neck problem that I’d been putting up with for several years. More recently he has been helping me with a knee ailment which is also improving. I couldn’t recommend George more highly."

Physical Examination

After our assessment we there will be a detailed physical examination to see how your whole body coordinates. This will usually involve checking:

Posture & Spine

How you stand, move and hold your pelvis.

Abdominal muscles

Checking for core strength or tummy separation (diastasis recti) especially if you are postnatal.

Hips and breathing

How your ribs, diaphragm and lower limbs move together.

Internal pelvic floor assessment

We will then offer an entirely optional internal examination to directly check muscle strength, tone and support. The physiotherapist can feel if your pelvic floor muscles are underachieve, overactive or have scar tissue.

Treatment plan

At the end of the session, your physiotherapist will explain their findings using models or diagrams. Together you will create a plan that may include:

  • Custom exercises Tailored pelvic floor contractions or relaxation techniques.
  • Lifestyle tweaks Modifications to your fluid intake, diet, exercise and activity habits.
